Heart Rate Variability: Why Does it Matter?

Heart Rate Variability: Why Does it Matter?

4 minute read

Have you ever heard of Heart Rate Variability (HRV)? It may sound like a complex health term, but it's simply the variation of time between your heartbeats. HRV is a powerful indicator of your health. And the good news is, it's something you can improve!

Why does HRV matter?

HRV, or Heart Rate Variability, is an important physiological metric that reflects the state of the Autonomic Nervous System and provides information about stress levels. The ANS works behind the scenes, automatically regulating our heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and digestion among other key tasks. It is divided into two large components called the sympathetic and parasympathetic system, also known as the fight-or-flight mechanism and relaxation response. These two mechanisms are controlled by an area of the brain called the hypothalamus to stimulate or relax different functions of our body.

Let’s dive deeper…

The sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are two branches of the autonomic nervous system, which controls the automatic functions of the body that we don't consciously think about, like breathing and digestion.

The sympathetic system is responsible for our "fight or flight" response, which prepares our body to respond to a perceived threat by increasing heart rate, dilating pupils, and releasing adrenaline. This response is important in situations where we need to quickly react to danger, such as when facing a predator or in a stressful situation.

On the other hand, the parasympathetic system is responsible for our "rest and digest" response, which helps us relax and conserve energy. It slows down heart rate, constricts pupils, and stimulates digestion. This response is important for our body to recover and recharge after periods of stress.

If we have persistent instigators such as stress, poor sleep, or unhealthy diet this can cause your HRV variability to overreach causing many health problems, such as heart conditions and mental health issues like anxiety and depression.

Can I track my HRV?

Of course, to accurately measure your HRV you will need a heart-rate monitor that tracks heart rate patterns. Thankfully, devices like Whoop and Apple Watch have made HRV tracking accessible and easy. Not only do they track HRV, but they also provide a wealth of information about our sleep, resting heart rate, and max heart rate. By analyzing this data, we can get a bigger picture of our overall health and make more informed decisions about our lifestyle.

A higher HRV is a great sign that our body is equipped to handle stress and adapt well to different situations. However, it's important to note that average HRV can vary greatly depending on our age and individual factors. So rather than comparing ourselves to others, it's best to monitor our own HRV patterns over time and take note of any changes.

How can you improve your HRV? Here are a few simple tips:

  1. Exercise and train appropriately: Regular exercise is one of the best methods for improving your heart rate variability. The key is finding a type of exercise that you enjoy and can stick to long-term. So, whether you're a fan of biking, strength training, or playing sports, find an activity that works for you and make it a regular part of your routine.
  2. Gratitude journaling: Writing down things you’re thankful for each day can elicit a corresponding uptick in heart rate variability. Plus, it's linked to lower blood pressure and reduced stress hormones. So, grab a journal and start jotting down those thankful thoughts - your heart (and mind!) will thank you.
  3. Get better sleep: Getting enough sleep is great, but let’s take it to another lever! Did you know that establishing a regular sleep and wake-up time each day can actually boost your HRV? Plus, it'll allow you to spend more time in those amazing restorative phases of sleep, like REM and deep sleep. So, go ahead, set your alarm and get ready for some serious snooze-time consistency!
